The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management bagged the 1st Runner-up Award at The Philippine MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions) Youth Challenge 2024, held last July 10, 2024 during the Philippine MICE Conference 2024 organized by the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board.

The team was composed of BS Tourism Management students, namely: Kyle Alexandra A. Mararac, Krishna Andrei O. Martinzo, Alyssa Shane P. Paguio, and Solomon M. Santiago under their event production, Lunggati Creations. This year’s event proposal entry is entitled, “MANGAN! Biyaheng Pampanga, a Dine and Ride Adventure!”

The team were under the guidance and supervision of their academic advisers Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang, MBA, and Inst. John Jerick C. Santos, MLOL. Additionally, the Tourism Promotions Board appointed Mr. Anton Magpantay as an industry coach to better align the wholeness of the event business proposal to the practice of the industry.

The competition was under the celebration of the Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism (HRT) Week organized by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB). The event is also part of the celebration of the World Tourism Month and Baguio City’s 114th Charter Anniversary.

The öÏÓãÊÓƵapp College of Tourism and Hospitality Management partnered with the Philippine Association of Researchers for Tourism and Hospitality, Inc. (PARTH) for the implementation of a 3-day HyFlex Capacity Building Seminar-Workshop on Research Collaboration and Grants Application held on October 1, 15, and November 05, 022, at the Multi-function Room, Buenaventura Garcia-Paredes, O.P. Building. The program aims to capacitate PARTH Individual members to collaborate with other academic staff and researchers in the tourism and hospitality academe and industry sectors. The capacity building will discuss different facets of research collaboration projects and grant application, project management, logistical arrangement, financial management, and different cases on a national research grant and team collaboration.

The objectives of the HyFlex event are as follows:

  1. To provide basic principles on research collaboration and grant application;
  2. To discuss the dynamics of project management in research and development;
  3. To determine significant aspects of research logistics and implementation;
  4. To analyze the protocols and strategies for research financial management and sustainability;
  5. To discover the experiences of research teams and collaborations from their previous research grant awards; and
  6. To conceptualize a research proposal that can be submitted to potential research grant applications

Different internal and external resource persons were invited to share their insights and experiences on research collaboration and national grants application. They are:

The öÏÓãÊÓƵapp University Network Quality Assurance has given its stamp of approval to four more bachelor’s programs of the University, namely the BA Communication, BA Journalism, BS Hospitality Management (with specializations in Hospitality Leadership and Culinary Entrepreneurship), and BS Tourism Management (with specializations in Travel Operation and Service Management and Recreation and Leisure Management), following the remote visit conducted in July 2022. The four programs, which were assessed during the 245h AUN-QA Programme Assessment are housed in the Faculty of Arts and Letters – Department of Communication and Media Studies (BA Communication and BA Journalism) and the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (BS Hospitality Management and BS Tourism Management).

The assessor team was composed of Prof. Dr. Satria Bijaksana, AUN-QA Council Member and Chief Assessor, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sharul Tazrajiman Hj Tajuddin, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Riza Atiq Abdullah Bin O.K. Rahmat, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tuan, Dr. Le Thi Giao Chi, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vongdeuan Osay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pornpun Prajaknate, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chailerd Pichitpornchai.

The assessment looked into how the program is being delivered, as envisioned in the University’s and programs’ vision, mission, goals, objectives, and outcomes, and how these are realized through the manpower and material resources provided by the University. The multi-stakeholder consultations included in the assessment proper involved University officials, the academic staff, the support personnel, students, alumni, and employers.

With the new recognition, eighteen of UST’s bachelor’s programs now have the AUN-QA’s nod. The first fourteen programs are BS Accountancy, BS Biochemistry, BS Biology, BS Chemical Engineering, BS Chemistry, Bachelor of Elementary Education, BS Electronics Engineering, BS Medical Technology, BS Nursing, BS Occupational Therapy, BS Physical Therapy, BS Psychology, and Bachelor of Secondary Education.

The two teams representing the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management won awards in the Youth for Tourism and Hospitality International Conference 2021 (#Y4TH 2021) on October 16 and 23, 2021. The announcement was on October 24, 2021.

Batanes IvaTrack

The team of Yaira Wren Sophia C. Laboy, Tricia Mae M. Li, Uan Cornelio E. Llaneta, Moira Rei C. San Juan, and Ricalyn C. Shimosawa was crowned champion in the Destination Marketing Plan Competition for their proposal called the “Batanes IvaTrack”, a mobile application that aimed to showcase Batanes’s brand of safe and secure tourism.

Moreover, Batanes IvaTrack aimed to rebuild Batanes’ tourism industry, especially in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic by: 1) providing an effective and feasible destination marketing strategy; 2) developing seamless synergies that will build ties among businesses, locals, and tourists; 3) promoting Batanes as a safe and secured “workation” destination, where tourists can travel and work while on vacation; and 4) providing different types of activities under “Bubble Tourism” that promotes sustainability.

The team’s advisers were Mr. Arnulfo Ricardo A. Butiong, MMC, Mr. Aristotle Chico, and Ms. Sarah Po. Ìý

Boracay experience vlog

Meanwhile, the team of Gabriel B. Echevarria, Aaliyah Naomi C. Senaca, and Marie Dominique I. Tayco was named the 1st runner-up in the Travel Vlog Competition.

The winning entry was a seven-minute video primer that simulated the travel experience to the famous Philippine travel destination, the Boracay Islands. Aside from showcasing the white sands of Boracay and its tourist gems to first-time travelers, the team also presented the travel requirements, as well as the directions to the tourist destination.

The team’s advisers were Mr. Arnulfo Ricardo A. Butiong, MMC, Ms. Jeanne Bianca Abad, and Mr. Edouard Kobi G. Janeiro.
