]]> Academic researchers from the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education presented data-based policy recommendations to lawmakers and officials of Congress in its first Policy Expo held on March 3 and 7, 2023, as part of the Research Fortnight. With the intent to “balance the scholarly and policy dimensions of social science research” and in an attempt to address “Philippine socio-economic and education issues,” the RCSSED, specifically its newly minted Research Utilization Unit, provided the platform for researchers to use their study’s recommendations as bases for policy. Among the possibilities are inclusion as bases for bills and ordinances, among others.

The RCSSED’s Research Utilization Unit, headed by Rey, anchors itself on three pillars: life and dignity (buhay at dangal); human rights (karapatang pantao); and democracy (demokrasya). According to RCSSED Director Jeremaiah Opiniano, the Center aims to have more regular engagements with policy makers in the future and expressed openness to having the researchers work on topics/issues of interest to the local legislators and officials.

]]> Researchers from the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education recently published a study investigating the factors associated with the intention of tertiary education faculty members to use the blended learning approach.

Asst. Prof. Ronaldo R. Cabauatan, PhD, Prof. Chin Uy, PhD, Asst. Prof. Ronaldo A. Manalo, DBA, and RCSSEd Director Belinda D.V. de Castro, PhD published the paper entitled “Factors Affecting Intention to Use Blended Learning Approach in the Tertiary Level: A Quantitative Approach” in the Scopus-indexed journal “Higher Education for the Future,” Volume 8, Issue 2.

The paper looked into the perceptions of faculty members of a comprehensive Philippine university and documented aversions to the blended learning approach due to the “amount of time [needed] for preparing materials, checking online submissions, and communicating with students.” The researchers argued that more opportunities for instructors to use the blended learning approach “will help them realize the importance of their role and that of the technology for the success of blended learning.”

Cabauatan, Manalo, and de Castro are faculty members of the College of Commerce and Business Administration, while Uy is a professorial lecturer at the UST Graduate School.

]]> A year after the onset of the community quarantine necessitated by the pandemic, economic worries persist at a macro and micro level. To get expert insights on the Philippines’ economic forecast, mid- and post-COVID, the Artlets Economic Society of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters held a webinar titled “Economic Outlook 2021: The Cost of Our Choices” on March 1, 2021, through Zoom.

Serving as speakers were: UnionBank Chief Economist Mr. Ruben Carlo Asuncion, Lina Group of Companies (LGC) Chairman and Bureau of Customs Commissioner Mr. Alberto Lina, and UST Department of Economics Chair Assoc. Prof. Carlos Manapat, DBA.

Based on a joint team analysis conducted by UnionBank Philippines (UBP) and Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), Asuncion’s talk was titled “Are we there yet? A return to a pre-COVID-19 PH economy”. While he forecasts that the Philippine economy is on the path to recovery based on the annual gross domestic product (GDP), it is in 2022 that the Philippine economy will likely reach pre-pandemic levels. It is expected that Gross Capital Formation will grow rapidly in 2021, to be led by public construction because private sector sentiment remains subdued.

Asuncion added that if vaccines are distributed widely, election spending may boost private consumption and will likely return to pre-COVID levels in 2022. Hedging that the AEV-UBP joint research is conservative compared to other forecasts by groups such as the Asian Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Asuncion posits that it is possible to reach pre-COVID levels in 2021 after widespread vaccination if the government would meet its spending target, the teenage demographic would be able to go out and spend, and private construction would resume normal activity by the second half of 2021.

Manapat’s lecture was titled “Economic situation amidst pandemic and the road to economic recovery.” He briefly summarized the state of 2020 Philippine economics in which gross national income, gross capital formation, OFW remittances, direct foreign investment, exports, and imports, among others, drastically decreased in the second quarter of 2020.

As the Philippines moves forward to the ‘better normal’, Manapat says that he agrees with figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) that a ‘v-shaped recovery’ is feasible. Based on his research, he forecasts a “positive 1.2 percent in GDP growth rate by the second quarter of 2022.”

                Lina spoke on the topic “The Philippine Logistics Industry in 2020 and the 2021 Outlook.” Over the last 40 years, the Lina Group of Companies (LGC) has been heavily involved in logistics, among other industries, and has facilitated the flow of goods, people, and information. The Chairman, fondly calling LGC “Ang Kargador ng Bayan”, said that the Philippines has the highest logistics cost in Southeast Asia due to high shipping costs and incidental charges like terminal container handling charges (THCs), container deposits, unexplained shipping lines charges, and inimical transport policies.

While these factors are not new, the community quarantine also increased demand and difficulty in transport and delivery of goods in unprecedented ways. For 2021 and beyond, LGC expects a continued spike in e-commerce and express delivery services. It will result in “coope-tition” among different logistics companies in the form of collocated warehouses, shared spaces and services, and subcontracting.

Over 170 UST students and guests virtually attended the three lectures.

]]> A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, UST. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the Ƶapp as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in UST for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. ]]> With the theme “Gurong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad” (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

“Napakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,” Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. “Pinapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba’t-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,”

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. “Ang dignidad ng guro ay nakabase sa kanyang atas, sa kanyang mandato, sa kanyang responsibilidad; samakatuwid, sa kanyang tungkuling ginagampanan: ang paghubog sa mga kamalayan upang masusing timbangin ang katwiran at turuan ang mag-aaral kung papaano umiwas sa panlilinlang, manindigan sa katotohanan, at ipaglaban ang katarungan.”

“Ang saligan ng dignidad ng pagiging guro ay ayon sa antas ng kanyang pagtupad sa atas na iginagawad sa kanya; ito ang nag-aangat sa guro. Ginagawa siyang kakaiba at nagtatangi sa kanya sa ibang mga larangan,” Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa UST.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
