In various paper presentations, Filipino thought was expounded on by Thomasian philosophers who attended the August 1鈥8, 2024 25th World Congress of 鱿鱼视频app (WCP), which was held at Sapienza University of Rome. 鱿鱼视频app Beyond Boundaries was the theme of the 25th WCP, which attracted researchers worldwide to discuss it as a global platform for philosophical conversation. Several academics from the 鱿鱼视频app (UST) in the Philippines were among the eminent attendees, and contributed to the inclusive and diverse discourse of the Congress.

Complying with the Congress’s pledge to diversity, researchers from UST gave talks and took part in panels that broadened the discussion on Filipino philosophy and its role in international discourse. Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas of the Department of 鱿鱼视频app, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics was a major contributor to the Congress. In addition to moderating and chairing the PAP Society Session titled “Filipino 鱿鱼视频app in Dialogue: Expanding the Conversation,” Aguas contributed to the Center for Research in Values and 鱿鱼视频app (CRVP) Round Table Discussion on National Values by presenting a paper titled “The Ambiguity of the Filipino Sense of Nationalism and Filipino Identity.”

In the Contributed Paper Sessions, Thomasian scholars presented their respective papers:

鈼徛 聽聽聽 Prof. Fleurdeliz R. Altez-Albela, PhD (Department of 鱿鱼视频app, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics) – “What Is Levinasian in Sustainability?: Sustainability in the Economy of Being Through Levinas鈥 Third”

鈼      Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD (Senior High School and Ecclesiastical Faculties) – “Education, Christian Values, and the Voiding of Reason: John Henry Newman鈥檚 Personalist Education”

鈼      Mr. Christian U. Solis, MA (Senior High School and Graduate School) – “Towards Understanding Fidelity in Marriage and Family: Paul Ricoeur on Man鈥檚 Capacity to Promise”

鈼      Mr. Charles Aldrin A. Delgado (Graduate School) – “Christianity as Discomfort: Kierkegaard鈥檚 鱿鱼视频app of Religion”

鈼      Inst. Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, MA (Institute of Religion and Graduate School) – “Understanding Filipino Close Family Ties Through Gabriel Marcel鈥檚 Mystery of the Family”

Aguas also presented the paper entitled “The Relevance of the Metaphysics and the Notions of Being and Analogy of St. Thomas.”

These talks demonstrated the breadth and depth of philosophical study at UST and the contributions made by Filipino academics to international philosophical debates. Additionally, through one-on-one interactions, the Congress gave Filipino scholars a rare chance to fortify relationships and build mutual trust.

The Congress emphasized Rome’s long-standing position as a crossroads of civilizations, and it began with a ceremony at the ancient Baths of Caracalla. Prof. Luca Maria Scarantino, President of FISP, and Prof. Antonella Polimeni, Rector of Sapienza University, both emphasized the merging of humanistic and scientific cultures in philosophical conversations, reinforcing this subject of interconnection in their introductory statements.

Scholars addressed pressing ethical, social, cultural, political, and spiritual concerns all week long. Topics covered included the ethics of artificial intelligence, with discussions on the implications of AI on human decision-making and the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, and the place of spirituality in secular cultures, with debates on the role of spirituality in a modern, secular society. The Congress featured round table discussions, invited sessions, symposia, contributed paper sessions, endowed lectures, plenary sessions, student sessions, and the FISP General Assembly. The goal of these talks was to question conventional wisdom in philosophy by tackling issues of sustainability, gender and cultural diversity, inequality, and other modern world concerns.

Every five years, the WCP is arranged by the Federation Internationale des Soci茅t茅s de Philosophie (FISP) or the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. The WCP is a major conference that brings together philosophers, educators, students, and philosophy aficionados worldwide for a week-long discussion of a certain issue.

Two academic researchers of the Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics presented papers on humanism and loving as critical thinking in the 17th International Conference on Persons, held at the Katholische Akademie in Berlin from July 22-26, 2024.

Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas, PhD of the Department of Philosophy discoursed on 鈥淐hristian Humanism and St. Thomas鈥檚 Notion of the Human Person,鈥 where he acknowledged that as science and technology advanced, spiritual dimensions of human life often became ignored. Using Aquinas鈥檚 philosophy, Aguas 鈥渟hows that a humanism centered on Christian belief is still a relevant and more acceptable proposition over modern and secular humanism.鈥 Furthermore, Aguas said that 鈥渇or St. Thomas, man has a spiritual component, and he is ordained towards God. He developed a Christian humanism anchored on theological personalism, a concept that emphasizes the unique relationship between each individual and God and how this relationship shapes our understanding of human dignity and purpose.鈥

Meanwhile, Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD of the Senior High School and concurrent Academic Collaborations Officer of the Ecclesiastical Faculties, presented his paper entitled 鈥淔rom Garden of Eden to Garden of Gethsemane: Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 Ethics of Incommensurability as a Justification of Loving as Critical Thinking,鈥 where he argued that the interiority of the person is neglected by traditionalist views of ethics. In doing so, he looks at Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 critique and discourses on the former鈥檚 ethics of incommensurability to address the flaw by integrating the reality of loving into critical thinking. Ringor argued that 鈥淗ildebrand鈥檚 approach provides a robust ethical framework that acknowledges the full complexity of the human person, thereby enriching critical thinking with a deeper understanding of love’s ethical significance.鈥

Senior Teacher Dino Tordesillas, PhD, a faculty member of the Senior High School鈥檚 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand and an academic researcher of the Research Center for the Natural Applied Sciences, was elected to a yearlong term as President of the Philippine Society for Development Biology (PSDB).

According to Tordesillas, his yearlong term will be focused on leading the society鈥檚 transition from the pandemic 鈥渉opefully to its tail end.鈥 The resumption of in-person activities is something Tordesillas is looking forward to, but the annual webinar series and master classes the PSDB sponsors will continue. An innovation they will work on this year is the 鈥淒ev Bio Caravan,鈥 鈥渨ith the goal to reach developmental biology researchers, instructors and students in other parts of the country.鈥 Tordesillas likewise underscored the goal of PSDB to provide a Filipino context to development biology. Tordesillas said in an interview with the Communications Bureau.

The Philippine Society for Development Biology (PSDB) aims to elevate the standards of biological studies in the country to help address key scientific problems and the Society believes that this can be achieved through the promotion of best practices of scientific teaching and research. PSDB also encourages cooperative and multidisciplinary research undertakings among its members, so we try our best to provide platforms for dissemination of recent scientific advancements, techniques, and research accomplishments. According to Tordesillas, the leadership wants 鈥淧SDB to become a medium for networking among our members, scientists, and educators in the field of Developmental Biology.鈥

In the past, PSDB included in its board of trustees Biological Sciences faculty members Alicia Ely J. Pagulayan, MSc and Emerita Simeon, PhD (retired).

On January 27, 2023, the 鱿鱼视频app honored St. Thomas Aquinas, the University Patron, in a Eucharistic Celebration and launched his Biennium 2023-2025 celebration at the Sant铆simo Rosario Parish.

Eyes that saw God through faith and love

In his homily, His Excellency Most Rev. Teodoro C. Bacani, O.P., D.D., Bishop Emeritus of Novaliches, reflected on Aquinas’s contemplative life and his journey in getting to know God. “He led an angelic life and he was a man who was, according to the Beatitudes, pure of heart. And the promise to those who are pure of heart is that they will see God,” Bishop Bacani said.

Bishop Bacani also underscored the importance of having faith, as exemplified by Aquinas, for it serves as an evidence, an instrument of seeing the invisible especially God. “St. Thomas saw more than the things themselves, but [he saw] the one who holds all things in existence, the one who holds all things in unity. He saw them all in the eyes of faith,” he noted.

However, while faith may be a powerful ingredient in understanding God, having it alone is not enough because it is love that gives faith its power, noted Bishop Bacani. He likewise deemed St. Thomas as the light of the Church and of the whole world. “St. Thomas received light. Having received the light with love, he passed them to others with great love [by] preaching and teaching.” Bishop Bacani said.

In conjunction with this momentous occasion, faculty members, who have been sharing the light of their knowledge, morals, and faith in bringing religious education, received the academic Mandatum cross, a tangible symbol of their commitment to both the University and the Catholic Church; they likewise pledged their oath of fidelity. The faculty members came from the Institute of Religion and the Senior High School.

The University likewise launched Aquinas’ Triennium celebration, marking three important jubilees of the Angelic Doctor:

1. 2023 marks the 700th anniversary of his canonization on July 18, 1323.

2. 2024 is the 750th anniversary of his death on March 7, 1274.

3. 2025 is the 800th anniversary of his birth on January 28, 1225.

The theme this year was “Saint Thomas: Contemplating the Beauty of God”.

Three Thomasian educators are among the contributors of a collection of the writings of Pope Francis translated into Filipino that was recently published by the Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. with permission from the Libreria Editrice Vaticana. They are Mr. Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo and Mr. Sir-Lien Hugh T. Tadeo of the Institute of Religion and Mr. Vince Henry M. Salles of the Senior High School.

Titled 鈥淎ng Galak ng Ebanghelyo: Evangelii Gaudium at Iba Pang Mahahalagang Akda ni Papa Francisco na Isinalin sa Wikang Filipino,鈥 the volume contains all of the most important texts of the Pope鈥檚 pontificate thus far, from his first encyclical Lumen Fidei to his latest Apostolic Letter Desiderio Desideravi.

In a brief message, His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, O.P., D.D. said that the translation of Church documents into the local languages is important for two reasons. 鈥Una, ang pagsasa-Filipino ay pagkilala sa presensya ng diwa ng Ebanghelyo sa sarili nating wika at katutubo kultura, gamit ang sarili nating mga sagisag at pamamaraan鈥 (First, translating them into Filipino is a recognition of the presence of the spirit of the Gospel in our own language and native culture, using our own symbols and ways of expression). (Second, translating them into Filipino is an effective way to bring the Gospel closer to our fellow Filipinos. A message expressed in one鈥檚 own language is more profound. It is more alive, has a stronger bite, and more appealing to the reader or the listener).

CBCP President and Bishop of Kalookan Pablo Virgilio David expressed his hope that the translations would help bring Filipino readers closer to the thought, spirituality, and reflection of Pope Francis or 鈥淟olo Kiko鈥 as we fondly call him. He also said that 鈥Ang pagbasa sa mga ito ay para na ring pakikinig natin sa kanya sa ating sariling wika鈥 (Reading these [translations] is like listening to him [speak] in our own language).鈥
