Gascon, MAN, RN spoke about Innovating Teaching and Learning with AI.

On August 28, 2024, College of Education Assistant Dean Louie B. Dasas, PhD will discuss (Re)Designing Learning Assessments with AI in Mind, while Institute of Religion academic researcher Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo, MA will close the series with the talk 鈥淪trengthening Humanity and Human Agency in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,鈥� in a big to refocus the discourse on the role of humans in the use of technology.

In a memorandum from the Office of Information and Communications Technology, the tools offer 鈥渋nvaluable benefits across diverse fields鈥� and encouraged the educational use of the said softwares. Among the expected benefits to the entire community are the improvement of digital skills, assistance in the creation of compelling projects, and enhancement of visual and graphic design skills.

The rollout marks a significant milestone in UST鈥檚 provision of software applications, particlarly Adobe, to Thomasians. In the past, those in design programs were prioritized. However, with graphic design now an important skill across all fields due to the ubiquity of online media, the University makes the softwares accessible to the entire community.

Thomasians can access their Adobe All Apps using their Google for Education suite accounts.

Embark on a unique cultural odyssey into the pioneering legacy of Elio Antonio de Nebrija, a renowned Spanish grammarian whose contributions profoundly influenced linguistic milestones in the Philippines and the world. Nebrija’s works inspired the creation of missionary grammar and vocabulary for native Amerindian and Philippine languages.

Instituto Cervantes previously displayed this exhibit in Intramuros from March 12 to July 20, 2024. The exhibit is an adaptation of the Nebrija exhibition by the National Library of Spain, commemorating the quincentennial anniversary of Nebrija鈥檚 legacy. Featuring immersive panels and rare book displays, the exhibition vividly showcases Nebrija鈥檚 cultural contributions and contextualizes his influence on the earliest grammars of Philippine vernacular languages, shaped by his pioneering teachings.

Recognized as the oldest library in the country, the Miguel de Benavides Library houses several works of Nebrija, including Collectanea de variis auctoribus (1541-1549), the two-volume Dictionarium redivivum (1754), and Aelii Antonii Nebrissenis De Institutione Grammaticae libri quinque (1816), which are now located in the Antonio Vivencio del Rosario UST Heritage Library. Moreover, the Heritage Library also holds numerous works on grammar and dictionaries of various Philippine languages, including Arte de la Lengua Bisaya de la Provincia de Leyte (1663), Arte de la Lengua Tagala y Manual Tagalog (1796), and Arte de la Lengua Zebuana (1836), among others.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Jose looks forward to 鈥渕ore awareness of our history and heritage in our daily lives, to shape our values.鈥� In particular, he called on Thomasians to 鈥渂e keenly aware of UST鈥檚 role in shaping Philippine history. This includes, among other things, learning to read historical documents in their original Spanish (in the same way that many like to learn Korean).鈥澛�

Jose is an authority in Church heritage and has published and read papers extensively on Church architecture and art. He continues to engage in the conservation and restoration of built heritage of Churches and works with government and non-government agencies alike. In the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, he chaired the Committee on Monuments and Sites (2001-2004), Committee on Archives (2011-2013), and Commissioner for Cultural Heritage (2011-2013). In 1999, he was feted with the Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Award for the Arts.

The NHCP is the country鈥檚 鈥減rimary government agency responsible for history and has the authority to determine all factual matters relating to official Philippine history.鈥� Among its mandates are to support and engage in research activities on Philippine history, its people, and important events. It maintains a historical data bank and Resource Center and recognizes places of historical significance.

The presence of international students, academic staff, and collaborations was touted as UST鈥檚 greatest strength as it made its debut in the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings, where it was ranked in the 601+ bracket. This position made it rank #3 among Philippine universities.

International outlook, which accounted for 7.5% of the total score, includes proportion of international students, proportion of international staff, and international collaboration. With a score of 67, this was UST鈥檚 strongest suit, followed by Teaching and Research Quality.

Teaching includes indicators such as teaching reputation, staff-to-student ratio, and doctorate-to-bachelor鈥檚 ratio, among others. Meanwhile, Research Quality credits citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence.

Voragen spoke about the relationship among language, body, and city, linking his practices as a poet and curator to show connections between the visual arts and writing.

For Voragen, artists and writers must engage with the city and its languages and use them as material to create new modalities and fresh expressions of art. 鈥淚 invite you to make things. Even [in creating] meaningless stories, you do creativity. Even meaning is form [鈥 try to meet the city, try to see how it will affect your body,鈥� Voragen said.

Voragen has shared his art and craft in the neighboring Southeast Asian countries. He served as a curator of 1335MABINI Gallery in Ermita, Manila from 2017-2019.

鈥淥pen Forms鈥� is part of the CCWLS International Writers and Scholars Lecture and Conversation Series, whose lineup consists of Filipino writers and scholars based abroad. Among them were Ninotchka Rosca, Sabina Murray, Gina Apostol, Miguel Syjuco, Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, R. Zamora Linmark, Eugene Gloria, Marivi Soliven, John Blanco, Lara Stapleton, M. Evelina Galang, Fidelito Cortes, Nerissa Balce, Amalia Bueno and Robert Nery; and foreign nationals, like Robin Hemley Tim Tomlinson, Dennis Haskell, Xu Xi, and Yukari Yoshihara.

Open Forms will serve as a space for students to explore experimental or hybrid poetry, paired with visual and other forms such as video, photography, collages, and performances.

The event was curated by Assoc. Prof. Nerisa Del Carmen Guevara of CCWLS and the Faculty of Arts and Letters and Assoc. Prof Mary Ann Venturina-Bulanadi, PhD of the College of Fine Arts and Design.

The Thomasian community gave gifts and dined with the community of Batomelong, which is led by the Barangay Captain, Hon. Alikhan K. Bentaib.

In his message, Captain Bentaib thanked the SOCCSKSARGEN Chapter鈥檚 representatives, led by incoming President Antonio Villanueva, Jr. and Secretary-General fr. Louie R. Finally, UST Assistant to the Rector for General Santos Professor Emeritus Maribel G. Nonato, PhD expressed hope that the University鈥檚 efforts in academics and research will be of great help to the local communities of Mindanao.

Dean Divina, who has been leading the Faculty of Civil Law since 2009, said, 鈥淭o attract the best, you have to offer the best.鈥� Thus, this partnership is their contribution to the University鈥檚 cause. 鈥淭his scholarship program represents our unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. According to Dean Kaw, the scholarship grants are more than just faculty development programs. 鈥淭hey are investments not only to the individual aspirations of the deserving candidates but also to the advancement of the legal profession,鈥� Dean Kaw said.

In the book, Mata gives the readers a portrait of President Ramon Magsaysay and also a glimpse of his harrowing firsthand accounts after the plane crash in Balamban, Cebu, which claimed the lives of the former president and 25 others, as its lone survivor. It was first published in 1957 and was co-penned with Vicente Villafranca.

Mila Magsaysay-Valenzuela and Joy Mata, daughters of the two respective Filipino icons, expressed their gratitude to those involved in organizing the book launch, including the University, which kept the legacy of their fathers alive.

“[Through this book], I hope that people realize that life is so fragile. And as fragile as it is, I hope it inspires people to live life with a lot of consequences and with integrity and love for country,” Mila said.

Mila also shared that they also conduct trekking activities that revisit the site of the plane crash in Cebu to commemorate the president’s death anniversary.

Memorabilia, photographs, and other items that offer a glimpse of the vibrant life of Mata, a Philets alumnus belonging to the class of 1959, were also exhibited in the lobby. He passed away in 2018.

In June 2023, Mata’s family donated 846 books from his Library. After turning over her late father’s books to the University, the new custodian of Mata’s books, Joy gathered her siblings and decided to publish a new edition, tapping Art Angel Commercial Quests, Inc. as the publisher.

“Although my father has already met his deadline, his little candle will continue to burn with so much warmth and light, especially [by] sharing his books with the readers at the UST Library and with everyone [through the] new edition of the book, One That Came Back,” Joy said.
