UST Honorary Professor for Chemistry Dr. Geoffrey Cordell returned to the University on December 4, 2024 as the inaugural lecturer in the Honorary Professor Lecture Series organized by the Department of Chemistry of the College of Science, in cooperation with the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences and the Graduate School.

The lecture, entitled “C.A.R.E.: Writing and Publishing Manuscripts and Beyond” was attended by students of the B.Sc. Chemistry program, DOST-ASTHRDP scholars under various natural science programs of the UST Graduate School and academic staff of the Department of Chemistry.

During the event, Prof. Cordell emphasized on the importance of properly communicating one’s scientific knowledge through publications in valid, peer-reviewed journals and how this is important in the development of capable scientists. Throughout his lecture, he used the acronym C.A.R.E. to highlight his key takeaways for the audience such as “Conduct Appropriate and Rigorous Experiments”, “Commit to Accurate Report as an Experimentalist”, and “Critically Assessing Research Expenditures”, among others. These examples, as well as many other CARE acronyms he has developed, have been published in the journal Natural Products Communications last September 2021 ().

Prior to the lecture, Prof. Cordell met with Acad. Prof. Emeritus Maribel G. Nonato, currently serving as Assistant to the Rector for UST General Santos, Prof. Rey Donne S. Papa, Dean of the College of Science, Assoc. Prof. Alan Rodelle M. Salcedo, Chair of the Department of Chemistry, and academic staff of the Department of Chemistry to discuss potential program offerings in the soon-to-be opened School of Science of UST General Santos. Prof. Cordell’s insights as an academic official of the University of Illinois and natural products researcher were instrumental as the department is preparing its program offerings for UST’s first campus in Mindanao.

Prof. Cordell, who is an emeritus professor in the University of Illinois at Chicago and former Dean of its College of Pharmacy, is a long-time collaborator of several natural products chemists of the UST Department of Chemistry, such as Prof. Emeritus Beatrice Q. Guevara, Acad. Prof. Emeritus Maribel G. Nonato and Prof. Ma. Alicia M. Aguinaldo. He was given the title Honorary Professor of Chemistry by the College of Science of the Ƶapp in 2017.

From December 7 to 11, 2024, the third-year BS Tourism Management students of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management embarked on an International Educational Tour to Bangkok and Pattaya, Thailand.

The tour provided a comprehensive learning opportunity for the students of Classes 3TOM1, 3TOM2, and 3TOM3. Designed to immerse them in the operational aspects of international tourism, the program aimed to achieve several objectives. These included gaining firsthand experience of Thailand’s tourism and hospitality sectors, assessing the roles of travel agencies in delivering tourism services, fostering cultural preservation and sustainable development practices, and reinforcing experiential and contextual learning. Additionally, students were tasked with creating safeguarding measures for cultural heritage and summarizing their experiences through a well-crafted paper and video presentation.

The five-day tour combined hands-on activities and cultural exploration, allowing students to immerse themselves in Thailand’s vibrant culture and traditions. Highlights included a relaxing Thai massage at Healthland, cooking classes at the Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy, and visits to iconic sites such as the Grand Palace, the Sanctuary of Truth, and the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

One of the most memorable experiences was the Thai Bus Food Tour, an innovative dining experience aboard a moving double-decker bus that showcased Bangkok’s culinary scene. This unique activity allowed students to enjoy a curated selection of local dishes while exploring the city’s landmarks. The tour offered valuable insights into how innovation and creativity can enhance tourist experiences, blending gastronomy with sightseeing in a sustainable and modern way.

Throughout the trip, students observed and analyzed the processes involved in itinerary planning, destination management, and the operations of tourism businesses. They also reflected on the importance of integrating cultural preservation into tourism practices, as demonstrated by Thailand’s efforts to sustain its rich heritage while embracing modern tourism innovations.

This international educational tour not only deepened the students’ knowledge of global tourism but also reinforced their understanding of sustainable practices and innovative approaches in the industry. By the end of the journey, they gained valuable insights and practical skills, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the evolving field of tourism management.

This enriching experience was organized and arranged by Allpoints Travel and Tours in collaboration with Class 3TOM1 Turismo Travels under the Travel Agency Management and Operations (TOSM5263) program.

The University’s College of Tourism and Hospitality Management held its first-ever symposium and colloquium on Destination Management and Marketing (DMM) on December 10, 2024 at the Medicine Auditorium with the theme, “Cutting Edge Campaigns: A look into the New Destination Marketing Strategies”. The event was designed to enhance students’ knowledge in destination marketing, emphasizing the transformative role of digital platforms, AI-driven content generation, and innovative strategies in the tourism sector.

The event featured talk segments from experts and specialists in the field of marketing namely, Mr. Shane “Shawn” Bellare, the Founder and Managing Director of Studio Bellare; and Dr. Paulo Benito S. Tugbang, the Department of Tourism’s Director for Product Development and Concurrent Director for Medical Travel and Wellness Tourism Programme; both shared their technical expertise, approach, and realistic knowledge about modern tourism marketing, destination marketing, and strategic tourism destination management.

On November 25, 2024, officials from the Office of the Assistant to the Rector for UST in Santa Rosa (UStaR), led by Prof. Philipina A. Marcelo, PhD, met with officials from the Schools Division of Santa Rosa City under the Department of Education (DepEd) Region IV-A (CALABARZON) led by the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Elvira B. Catangay, in line with the general directive of the Rector of the University, Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD. The meeting aimed to discuss plans for future academic programs at UStaR, explore the possibility of launching academic offerings at the campus earlier than originally planned, and how DepEd Santa Rosa and the Ƶapp (UST) can collaborate on mutually beneficial developmental programs.

Central to the discussions was data gathering strategies in Junior and Senior High Schools (JHS and SHS) across Santa Rosa to directly involve learners and their families in making UStaR’s future offerings correspond to their educational aspirations and future plans.

Also present in the meeting were Dr. Seigfred V. Prado, Executive Assistant at UStaR, and Mr. Adolfo C. Ibayan, Planning Officer III of the School Governance and Operations Division.  Catangay and Ibayan expressed their support on the strategic plans of the University for UStaR and welcomed opportunities to collaborate with UST, most importantly, in responding to the urgent demand for quality teachers in the region, recommending that UST consider offering undergraduate and graduate programs in Education.

Beyond academic program planning, DepEd officials shared areas where UST could play a vital role in enhancing teacher training, particularly in Senior High Schools in the City of Santa Rosa. Considering the established strengths of the University as evidenced by the international and local accreditation of its academic programs as well as performance in various educational activities that measure student outcomes, DepEd officials suggested areas for collaboration, which include Values Education, Special Education, Sports Science, Guidance Counseling, Music and Fine Arts, and Technical-Vocational Programs. They also proposed sharing of UST’s best practice in integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), technology, and community development into teaching methods.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Partnerships

Following discussions of mutually beneficial opportunities in broad strokes, the officials agreed to identify specific opportunities in a follow-up meeting in January 2025 at the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center (UST-TTCIC) with an expanded group of officials from both sides. This meeting will explore immediate collaborative opportunities and lay the groundwork for long-term initiatives that address the City’s educational challenges and determine the wealth of bigger opportunities that can arise from such collaborations. Consistent with the University’s vision regarding its expansion plans, UStaR’s collaboration with DepEd Santa Rosa can help define the University’s role as a key player in the City’s educational landscape.

This engagement highlights UST’s commitment to aligning its future academic offerings with the needs of the Santa Rosa community, fostering meaningful partnerships, and delivering impactful educational programs that benefit both learners and educators with long-term benefits to the City and the CALBARZON Region.

From November 27 to December 1, 2024, the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) proudly presented Pagtanaw Echague, Isabela. Spearheaded by Sentro Turismo, UST CTHM’s research and extension arm, this immersive, week-long event brought together 224 passionate third-year BS Tourism Management students from various sections—3TOM1, 3TOM2, 3TOM3, 3TOM4, 3TOM5, and 3TRL1. It was an unforgettable journey that provided students with a unique opportunity to bridge academic knowledge with real-world applications in tourism management, community engagement, and heritage preservation.

The Pagtanaw program was more than just an academic task; it was an integrated fieldwork and heritage forum designed to engage students in hands-on tourism development projects that benefit the local community of Echague, Isabela. Working in small groups, students collaborated on documenting historical and cultural sites, designing sustainable tourism development plans, and highlighting the unique tourism potential of Echague. These initiatives were grounded in a deep respect for local culture and aimed at enhancing the region’s tourism offerings while promoting sustainability.

A key feature of the program was the active partnership with the Municipal Government of Echague, Isabela led by Hon. Francis Faustino A. Dy (Mayor), Hon. Faustino “Inno” A. Dy V (Representative, 6th District of Isabela), and the Municipal Cultural and Tourism Officer, Mr. Louie Simbi. Their involvement was crucial in shaping the program’s direction and ensuring the alignment of the students’ efforts with the municipality’s development goals. This collaboration allowed the students to gain invaluable insights into community-based tourism planning, while also contributing to the region’s long-term vision for sustainable growth.

Special leadership was demonstrated by the 3TOM3 section, who, under the guidance of their course facilitators, handled travel arrangements and logistics for the entire fieldwork. As part of their Travel Agency Management Operations course, these students took on the responsibility of coordinating transportation, accommodation, and event planning, showcasing their ability to manage real-world tourism operations. Their professionalism and attention to detail were key to the seamless execution of the fieldwork, elevating the entire experience for all participants.

Through Pagtanaw, the students were not only involved in planning and documenting tourism sites but also played an active role in preserving the cultural heritage of Echague. Their research emphasized the importance of integrating heritage conservation into tourism development plans, ensuring that future visitors can appreciate and respect the area’s rich cultural legacy while contributing to the community’s economic growth. This commitment to sustainable tourism reflects the core values of UST CTHM and Sentro Turismo—responsible tourism that fosters cultural awareness and benefits local communities.

The Pagtanaw Echague, Isabelawas a powerful testament to the impact of education and community collaboration in shaping the next generation of tourism professionals. Under the leadership of UST Sentro Turismo and with the support of the municipal government, UST students gained critical leadership and organizational skills while making meaningful contributions to the future of Echague’s tourism sector.

This initiative not only provided practical insights into tourism management but also prepared students to become leaders in sustainable tourism, equipped with the knowledge and passion to promote responsible travel and cultural preservation. As the partnership among UST CTHM, UST Sentro Turismo, and the Municipal Government of Echague continues to grow, Pagtanaw provides a model for future projects that seek to integrate education, community development, and tourism sustainability.

The rich cultural heritage of the Municipality of Echague, Isabela was on full display in a youth forum organization by forty-two (42) BS Tourism Management students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, which organized the Youth Heritage Forum entitled “Paddarafung LikHabi: Mga Hiyas ng Nakaraan, Gabay Tungo sa Kaunlaran”. Held on November 30, 2024, at the San Fabian Amphitheater in Echague, Isabela, the event aimed to foster unity among Yogad Ethnic Minority Group students, instill pride in local heritage, and cultivate a deeper appreciation of culture while simultaneously developing entrepreneurial and marketing skills.

Part of the academic requirements of the students, this service-learning project was spearheaded by Sikhay Studios of class 3TOM5 in collaboration with the UST Sentro Turismo, the UST Simbahayan Community Development Office, and Intenzyc. The forum featured a series of enriching activities, including a Rattan Culture Seminar and Workshop facilitated by the Echague Rattan Weavers Association, a Marketing and Entrepreneurship Seminar led by Mr. John Jerick C. Santos, and a Contemporary Dance Workshop conducted by Intenzyc.

Municipal Tourism and Cultural Arts Officer Mr. Louie Simbi underscored the significance of preserving local traditions such as rattan weaving, highlighting its potential to establish Echague as the weaving capital of the Philippines. “Our traditions are the foundation of our identity,” Simbi remarked. “By passing these skills to the next generation, we not only preserve our culture but also create opportunities for economic growth.”

The hands-on rattan weaving experience led by Ms. Sally Montalban of the Echague Rattan Weavers Association was an interactive workshop that allowed 21 senior high school students from Doña Magdalena H. Gafud High School, Echague National High School, and Ugad High School to immerse themselves in the intricacies of this traditional craft, gaining valuable insights into its cultural and economic importance.

The event was conducted as part of the academic requirements for the course THM 52019: Introduction to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events Management, facilitated by Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang. This initiative exemplified the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to contribute meaningfully to their community while enhancing their professional competencies.

The Youth Heritage Forum is a testament to the power of youth-led initiatives in bridging cultural heritage and modern skills. Through projects like “Paddarafung LikHabi,” students not only celebrate their roots but also pave the way for sustainable development anchored in local identity and entrepreneurial innovation.
