Manila Archbishop His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, D.D., presided over the Eucharistic Celebration for the feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of all Catholic universities for whom UST was named.

The Mass, held on January 27, 2022, was concelebrated with the Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of the Philippines Very Rev. Filemon I. Dela Cruz, Jr., O.P., the UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., Ph.D., and the Dominican Fathers, at the Sant铆simo Rosario Parish Church through hybrid modality.

For this year, the theme of the Feast Day celebration was 鈥淪aint Thomas: Beacon of Hope and Perseverance.鈥

In his homily, Cardinal Advincula noted that the theme was timely and relevant, 鈥済iven what we have been through the past two years of the pandemic, as an educational institution and in our personal lives.鈥

鈥淏oth teachers and students know the perseverance needed in online teaching and distance learning. Both staff and administrators hope for the end of the pandemic, for a safer and more suitable environment to work and study,鈥 the Cardinal explained.

Despite the difficulties, the Cardinal urged the faithful to follow St. Thomas鈥 example of persevering, hoping, and holding on to his faith. His family was originally opposed to his desire to become a Dominican and placed him under house arrest for a year, but St. Thomas鈥 determination remained strong.
Eventually, St. Thomas would produce prodigious scholarly work through faith, reason, and the scientific manner of theologizing. He contributed immensely to philosophy and theology, and remains a guiding light and pillar of thought for over 700 years.

鈥淚t is important to persevere in this mission of education and formation鈥攑andemic or no pandemic鈥攊f it is our hope to produce Catholic students who are committed, compassionate, and competent to face the questions and challenges of our time,鈥 emphasized the Cardinal.

The Manila Archbishop concluded his homily with a prayer that, 鈥淟ike St. Thomas, we persevere in hope so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to you, Heavenly Father, so that all of our lives will be for the love of Thee.鈥

Cardinal Advincula, who underwent the Rite of Profession to commit himself to the Order of Preachers in December 2021, was formed as a diocesan seminarian in the UST Central Seminary in Manila. Later, he took up Canon Law Studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, Italy.
In the same celebration, the mandatum docendi or academic mandate was conferred on professors from the Institute of Religion who made their public Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity. The mandatum signifies their commitment to ensure the delivery of a sound theological education faithful to the magisterium of the Church as part of providing quality Catholic education rooted in faith and Saint Thomas鈥 continuing legacy.

UST Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs Rev. Fr. Pablo T. Tiong, O.P., presented the academic staff to Cardinal Advincula.

In celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Canonical Establishment of the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish, Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, O.P., D.D. presided over the Eucharistic Celebration on March 21, 2022.

The Sycamore trees of the Parish

In his homily, Cardinal Advincula underscored the importance of having the deep desire to encounter Jesus, echoing the day’s Gospel where Zacchaeus climbed a Sycamore tree just to have a glimpse of the Lord. “The desire to encounter and to commute with the Lord must be our lasting desire, must be the motivation of every activity and program in this Parish,” Cardinal Advincula said.

According to the Manila Archbishop, climbing our version of Sycamore trees, which the Lord constantly brings us, can help us overcome the two blocks that hamper our desire to see the Lord: a crowded heart and the anxiety of feeling small. He likewise compared the Parish priests and the lay members present and past to Sycamore trees that contributed to the community’s thriving history and service to the Church since its establishment in 1942. “The beauty of the story of Zacchaeus is that the Lord sends us many Sycamore trees to help us see Jesus […] we remember the parish priests and lay leaders who contributed immensely to the growth of this Parish. We thank them for being our sycamore trees that helped us see Jesus clearly amidst the crowd of Parish life, amidst the limitations and difficulties along the journey,” Cardinal Advincula said.

In his message, Santis铆mo Rosario Parish Priest Rev. fr. Paul Reagan O. Talavera, O.P. expressed his gratitude to all his predecessors, as well as the late Assoc. Prof. Richard G. Pazcoguin, O.P., who wrote “Sa Lilim ng Iyong Pagkalinga”, the song he gifted to the Parish for its 80th anniversary celebration. “Your services built the Parish to how and what it is now,” fr. Talavera said.

Brief history of the Parish

During the turbulent months at the dawn of the Second World War, then-Archbishop of Manila, the Most Rev. Michael J. O鈥 Doherty, D.D. issued a decree on March 21, 1942, establishing the Santis铆mo Rosario Parish. One month later, on April 26, He presided over a Pontifical High Mass at the UST Chapel, which he canonically inaugurated the parish, with Fr. Emiliano Serrano, O.P. as its first pastor.

The UST Chapel, built in art deco style, was among the earliest edifices in the campus, and has since served as a venue of the official and religious functions of the University since 1932. It became the center of the liturgico-sacramental life of the parishioners.

On its high altar was the enshrined image of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was transferred from the old chapel of the University in Intramuros.

On September 28, 1942, the image of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila was transferred to the 鱿鱼视频app and it was enshrined at the main altar of the UST Chapel. The image of Mary was spared from the destruction of the Old Santo Domingo Church in Intramuros; thus, the first fiesta celebration of the Santisimo Rosario Parish, set on October 7, the universal feast of the Holy Rosary, was graced by the presence of the historical image of the Blessed Mother. This event went on for several more years until in 1954 when the image of the La Naval was solemnly transferred to the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City.

The original parish image was then restored to its former place at the high altar, until the implementation of the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

The Dominican Legacy

Cardinal Advincula, whose message to the Dominican family and the Thomasian community was read by fr. Tiongco, said the celebration of the Dominican Jubilee was put into proper perspective, thanks to the Master of the Order Very Rev. fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner, III, O.P.

“The Master of the Order, our fellow Filipino, writes, ‘We will celebrate St. Dominic not as a saint alone on a pedestal, but a saint enjoying table fellowship with his brothers, gathered by the same vocation to preach God鈥檚 Word and sharing God鈥檚 gift of food and drink,'” fr. Tiongco said.

Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to fr. Timoner, Pope Francis emphasized the spirituality of synodality, a reminder that St. Dominic chose to be called鈥攏ot as sub-prior鈥攁s Brother Dominic.

“[Pope Francis] held that the gift of St. Dominic and the Dominicans can be seen in their contribution in its mission to schools and institutes of higher learning, in the arts and sciences, in the simplicity of poverty and charitable works, and even in martyrdom,” fr. Tiongco said.

“The Dominican family has shown us that the glory of St. Dominic lies not in his being alone on a pedestal, but in synodality, walking, and journeying together as one family,” fr. Tiongco added.

Moreover, Advincula added that the celebration of the Dominican Jubilee was fitting since the country is also celebrating the 500 years of Christianity this year.

Acknowledging the Order and their centuries-worth of contributions to the Catholic Church and to the country, Advincula looked back at the past and cited the missionary work of his predecessor, Domingo de Salazar, who served as Manila’s first Archbishop.

A staunch advocate of human rights, Salazar was a Dominican missionary who fought in behalf of the oppressed Filipinos during the Spanish rule centuries ago.

“As I unite myself to you in celebrating this jubilee, I pray that we may all learn from St. Dominic’s synodal process, of preaching, not to glorify the self, but to share the light of truth to others, especially to the poor, the young people, the oppressed, and the marginalized.” Advincula said in his message.

The theme of the Eucharistic Celebration was “At Table with Saint Dominic”, in reference to the message of fr. Timoner on the preparation of the Jubilee of 2021.

In commemoration of the 800th anniversary of St. Dominic de Guzman’s Dies Natalis, or the eternal life in heaven, Archbishop of Manila Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, O.P., D.D. presided over the Eucharistic Celebration on August 4, 2021 at the Sant铆simo Rosario Parish.

Remembering St. Dominic as the salt of the Earth, light of the world

In his homily, grounded on the two central images of salt and light, Cardinal Advincula said the Thomasian community must remember and reflect on St. Dominic’s life, which was dedicated to serve the Church and the people: “St. Dominic’s zeal in preaching the gospel remains an example for us today, like the exaltation of St. Paul in our Second Reading.” The Thomasian cardinal added: “St. Dominic preached the word and stayed with his task, whether convenient or inconvenient, constantly teaching and never losing patience.”

Moreover, relating the milestone with the celebration of the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines this year, Cardinal Advincula mentioned that St. Dominic’s legacy of preaching has been kept alive by his successors. “We cannot ignore the great contributions of the sons of St. Dominic to our country. The Dominican missionaries have truly become salt and light, [who are] faithful to their mission of preaching the Gospel of Jesus,” he said.

Cardinal Advincula, who is currently the 33rd Bishop of Manila, also mentioned that the first Bishop of Manila was a Dominican missionary, Bishop Domingo de Salazar, O.P., who served from 1579 to 1594.听“Domingo de Salazar was a great son of St. Dominic, [who was] grounded in the truth of universal human rights and defended the dignity and the rights of the native people,” Cardinal Advincula said, citing Pope Francis’ letter to the Master of the Order, Very Rev. fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner III, O.P., in celebration of the Order’s Jubilee Year.

The Christian Standard

Meanwhile, Cardinal Advincula reminded the Thomasian community of their role as “the salt of the Earth and the light of the world”, which Jesus had entrusted to each and everyone. 鈥淲hat we find here, my dear friends, is an incredible esteem, trust, and confidence that the Lord has in us; it is an incredible hope that he places in us,鈥 he said.

鈥淛esus encourages us to be aware of this [role], to be conscious of this [role]. He is telling us that we should not simply remain superficial, but instead go down deep in the deepest recesses of our hearts. And there, we will find the lighted lamp and a handful of salt,” Cardinal Advincula added.

The two central images both signify the Church鈥檚 way of living and proclaiming the Gospel. 鈥淏oth salt and light achieve their purpose by being consumed and by disappearing, like salt in food and like oil in the lamp. This points to a discrete way of loving. Both [images] are also at the service of others. Salt gives flavor to food so that someone else can enjoy eating it, while the lamp provides light so that someone else can walk safely. And so, salt and light are images of a love that is not directed to one’s self, but places one’s self generously at the service of others. And this precisely is Christian love […] this is the standard with which we should measure ourselves,” Cardinal Advincula said.
