The Ƶapp invites you to the 9th installment of the Leonardo Legaspi Lecture Series from July 18 to 19, 2023 at the George S.K. Ty Function Hall, Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. Building. The theme of this conference will be “Truth as Dialogue: Conversations on St. Thomas Aquinas and the Contemporary Questions on Truth”.

Day 1

Kicking off the plenary sessions, Prof. Fr. Mark Daniel Holtz, O.P., Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Ƶapp of Pontificia Università San Tommaso d’ Aquino, will lecture on “Plurium verorum plures veritates: Alethic Pluralism and the Plurality of Truth in Thomas Aquinas”.  Meanwhile, Prof. Jovito Cariño, PhD of the UST Department of Ƶapp will share his insights in his lecture entitled, “Tagpuan, Tapatan, Talaban: Si Santo Tomas de Aquino, Dayalogo at ang Kontemporanyong Paghahanap sa Katotohanan” (Encounter, Exchange, Engagement: St. Thomas Aquinas, Dialogue and the Contemporary Search for Truth).

Inst. Sir-Lien Hugh Tadeo, MA will serve as the moderator.

Day 2

Sr. Prof. Catherine Joseph Droste, O.P. of the Pontificia Università San Tommaso d’ Aquino will lecture on “Forming Conscience in a Contemporary World: Aquinas’s Teaching on the Gifts of Wisdom and Counsel”. Lastly, fr. Rodel E. Aligan, O.P., SThD, UST Graduate School Regent, will cap the plenary sessions with his lecture on “Relevance of St. Thomas Aquinas on Truth, Communication and Authenticity of Christian Life in the Digital Age”

Asst. Prof. Maila M. Blanza will be the day’s moderator.

The two-day conference is organized by the Ecclesiastical Faculties, Faculty of Arts and Letters, Institute of Religion, Graduate School, and the Center for Theology, Religious Studies and Ethics to celebrate the Triennium of St. Thomas Aquinas: the 700th anniversary of his canonization (2023), the 750th anniversary of his death (2024), and the 800th anniversary of his birth (2025).

The books of UST  Authors , Mr. Paul A. Castillo, Mr. Joel H. Vega, and Assoc. Prof. Jovito V. Cariño, PhD, received recognitions in the 38th National Book Awards, announced on November 4, 2019 on the National Book Development Board – Philippines’s Facebook page.

Delos Reyes’ “Finding Teo: Tula/Talambuhay” was adjudged the Best Book of Nonfiction Prose in Filipino. Finding Teo was a portrait of the Filipino Poet Teo Antonio, as told by Delos Reyes. Meanwhile, Castillo’s “Walang Iisang Salita” was named the Best Book of Poetry in Filipino. Walang Iisang Salita is Castillo’s debut book that explored the interstices of language with each poem, crafted with precision of words, inviting the reader to sit on and reflect.

Vega’s “Drift” was named the Best Book of Poetry in English. Drift is Vega’s first book of poems that lyrically brought to light the everyday things demanding to be viewed from different perspectives. Cariño’s “Muni: Paglalayag sa Pamimilosopiyang Filipino” bagged the Best Book in Social Sciences. Muni is Cariño’s examination of Filipino culture through different lenses such as Thomism, Metaphysics, Marxism, and etc.

Delos Reyes, the Coordinator of the  program, and Castillo are resident fellows of the . Meanwhile, Cariño is the incumbent Chair of the .

Fourteen faculty members from different academic departments in the University have successfully completed an intensive training on translation held for ten consecutive Saturdays from 22 September to 1 December 2018 at the Lourdes J. Custodio ICD Room, Albertus Magnus Building, UST. National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) co-
facilitated the training, together with National Committee on Language and Translation of the NCCA Chair Dr. Michael M. Coroza.

The training was funded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino. Coroza is also a professor of the Ateneo de Manila University and the UST Graduate School.

The successful fellows of the intensive training on translation were: Assoc. Prof. Jovito V. Cariño, Ph.D., and Prof. Franz Giuseppe F. Cortez, Ph.D. of the Department of Ƶapp; Asst. Prof. Evalyn B. Abiog, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, Ph.D. and Asst. Prof. Raquel R. Jimenez of the Department of English; Asst. Prof. Amur M. Asuncion, Ed.D, Asst. Prof. Elenita C. Mendoza, Mr. Alvin Ringgo C. Reyes, and Asst. Prof. Ma. Lanie V. Vergara of the Department of Filipino; Prof. Felicidad Galang-Pereña, Ed.D., and Assoc. Prof. Luciana L. Urquiola, Ph.D. of the Department of Literature and the Humanities; and Prof. Joan Christi S. Trocio-Bagaipo, Ph.D., Mr. Christopher E. Esparagoza, and Asst. Prof. Chito M. Sawit, Ph.D., of the Institute of Religion.

The intensive training on translation is a capacity-building effort of the Department of Filipino for the planned Sentro sa Salin, an office that will lead all translation undertakings in the University. According to Department of Filipino Chair Alvin Ringgo Reyes, the pool of translators of the Sentro shall come from the fellows of the training. They shall be assigned translation works within and outside the University based on their expertise to make knowledge in various fields more accessible to a wider Filipino audience, to translate indigenous knowledge for the benefit of foreign consumers, and to contribute to the intellectualization of the Filipino language.

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, UST. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the Ƶapp as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in UST for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Author byline should indicate the Ƶapp as address in the publication.
