Professor Valentin C. Dones III, PhD, Director of the Center for Health Research and Movement Science and academic researcher of the Department of Physical Therapy, was named the Outstanding Professional of the Year 2024 in the field of Physical Therapy by the Professional Regulation Commission, which conferred the awards on August 2, 2024 (Friday).

In a message to the Thomasian community, Dones called on Thomasians to “be driven by a passion to serve others as a gift from God,” to whom he dedicates the victory, along with his family. As a lifelong member of a Dominican academic community, Dones shares the importance of prayer and “offering every action as a form of worship.” Dones said: “We are called to perform our duties with love, thank those who support us, forgive those who have wronged us, and see every task as an opportunity to thank and praise God.”

Dones was nominated by the accredited professional organization, the Philippine Physical Therapy Association (PPTA), which vetted nominees based on qualifications, professional activities, character, and most importantly, contributions to the profession. Dones’s nomination by PPTA emanated from the nominations of CHRMS academic researchers Asst. Prof. Lyle Patrick D. Tangcuangco and Inst. Mark Angel B. Serra.

Dones is a research fellow at St. Luke’s Medical Center and is involved in two projects funded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). His various research projects address issues such as hospitalized COVID-19 patient outcomes, hepatocellular carcinoma risks, hypertensive urgency and emergency, and the delivery of blended teaching in health science programs.

Also an innovator, he is the Chief Executive Officer of PainFree Management and Consulting, Inc., which is a grant awardee of the DOST-PCHRD and an incubatee of UST’s own TOMASInno Center, the in-house technology business incubator.

Ms. Marilou J. Raval, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy alumna of the Graduate School, presented a research poster during the April 9-11, 2021 World Physiotherapy Congress. The study was entitled “Correlation on the presence of home hazards with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and history of falls among community-dwelling older persons in District V, Manila.”

Using a cross-sectional correlational design, thirty-seven participants with an average age of 69.76 years old were randomly sampled and provided the HOMEFAST-HP and Fall History Questionnaire. Among the home hazards found to be of significance were loose mats that were not securely fixed and inadequate height and firmness of the bed. Those with a history of falls likewise reported problems with reaching kitchen items. The study recommended home assessment and modification as part of fall prevention programs.

Raval’s research poster

Raval, a faculty member of the Mariano Marcos State University, co-authored the research with Assoc. Prof. Donald S. Lipardo, PhD, Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH, and Ms. Catherine Joy T. Escuadra, MHPEd. All three are faculty members of the Department of Physical Therapy of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and teach in the UST Graduate School.

Mr. Christian Rey D. Rimando, MSPT and Mr. Mark Philip P. Hernandez presented an e-poster in the 2021 World Physiotherapy Congress, held from April 9-11, 2021. The poster, entitled “The Immediate Effect of M2T Blade in Increasing Hamstring Flexibility of Recreational Basketball Players: A Pre-Post Treatment Design,” addressed the risk of hamstring injuries as a result of decreased flexibility, which can be addressed by myofascial release tools, such as the M2T blade.

The study recruited forty male recreational basketball players with (+) tight hamstrings and separated them into control and experimental groups. The study found that the M2T blade was “a useful adjunct in physical therapy intervention in providing short-term improvement in hamstring flexibility” and recommended further studies to establish the long-term effects of the blade.

e-Poster presented by Rimando

Rimando is a faculty member of the Department of Physical Therapy of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, while Hernandez pursued a Master of Science in Physical Therapy degree from the Graduate School.

On September 21, 2015, Dr. Suarez and Dr. Dones presented seven of their research publications in a post-conference workshop entitled ‘Fascia: The Missing Link in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lateral Epicondylalgia’ at the Fourth Fascia Congress in Reston, Virginia, USA.  The Fourth Fascia Congress was a highly regarded meeting of researchers, clinicians and educators whose primary interest is in the human fascia. During the conference, the latest and best scientific researches on human and animal fasciae were presented.  On September 25, 2015, Dr. Dones presented his Biomechanical Taping Technique, a novel technique used in the treatment of musculoskeletal pains, to the rehabilitation team of Wyckoff Heights Medical Centre Hospital in Bushwick, Brooklyn in New York City, USA.

On September 28, 2015, both faculty members visited the California Baptist University (CBU), an institution which recently inked a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ƶapp in March 2015. Dr. Suarez, who was instrumental in facilitating the linkage between UST and CBU, initiated the drafting of an Agreement on Implementation of a research project on obesity with Dr. Margaret Barth, the Program Director of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the College of Health Sciences, CBU. After which, Dr. Suarez and Dr. Dones presented their research outputs on Snacking in Filipino Children and Effectiveness of Biomechanical Taping in Musculoskeletal Disorders, respectively, to the faculty and students of the College of Health Sciences.
