For centuries, Indian Catmon or Dillenia indica has been used in many parts of Asia as an edible fruit. When matured, the round fruit can grow as big as 12 centimeters in diameter. The fruit may contain five seeds. When processed, the fruit pulp is used in Indian and Malayan Cuisine as curry and jam. The juice extracted from the fruit is also turned into beverage in India when mixed with sugar and water.

In the Philippines, the counterpart of Indian Catmon or Elephant Apple is the Katmon or Dillenia philippenensis, which is endemic to the Philippines. Our native Katmon, is also used as a souring ingredient for sinigang and other sour dishes.

The fruits of the Indian Catmon are also popular on folkloric medicine across Asia.
